I was recently shopping for a new watch. In the process, I stumbled across the widely available G-Shock watch from Casio. They are designed to operate in the same rough-and-tumble outdoor environment that the Trimble handhelds thrive on.

Here is a product description from an on-line retailer with a short history of the product

In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewelry that needs to be handled with care, and was the result of Casio engineers taking on the challenge of creating the world's toughest watch...

Two engineers, with a vision to create the ultimate watch, assembled a rogue team of engineers and named their mission, "Project Tough." Through perseverance and unusual testing methods, such as throwing prototypes out the second floor bathroom window to the asphalt below, they developed the first G-Shock in 1983. This watch was able to withstand their then benchmark of "Triple Ten" criteria, namely 10 years of usage, 10 atmospheres (water resistance) and a 10m fall (shock resistance)

Our goal with the Outdoor Rugged product line is similar to G-Shock: To shatter the notion that a handheld computer is a fragile piece of equipment. We have now been selling our OutdoorRugged products since 2000. How are we doing?

Congratulations, Casio on inspiring us and showing us that rugged electronic products could be done. For more information on the Casio G-Shock story and their 25 year G-Shock anniversary check out www.gshock.com.
