Every year backpacking and outdoor publications and websites come out with their top ten products. It's a great way to learn about a new cutting edge products, old tried-and-true favorites or find an idea for that perfect gift. Here are some of my favorite rugged products (and some that are still on my wish list). Maybe you can use them while you are out backpacking or hiking this year.

10. Felt Virtue Two - This bike features an awesome new suspension design, great for the most hard core of riders. If you're more of a traditionalist however, you can't go wrong with a Santa Cruz Superlight.

If you're new to rugged computing and are hungry for a comprehensive-yet-understandable overview of what "rugged" means, I'd recommend that you read this article by Group Mobile Rugged Computers. They cover everything from non-rugged laptops all the way through rugged standards and IP ratings, wrapping up with the concept of price vs cost.

One note: you'll see that the definition of "fully rugged" can vary, e.g., they consider IP54 (standing up to a heavy spray) to be a "fully rugged" laptop. For those who need something more durable, our handhelds have an IP67 rating, which we differentiate with the term "outdoor rugged" -- standing up to dust and temporary immersion. If your application calls for working outdoors, be sure you know the IP rating of the computer you select. Weather is unforgiving, and you don't want to lose your device and your data to the elements.

Review of SatViewer for Nomad

Nomad units with integrated GPS now may come with a useful tool - SatViewer. This handy application allows users to monitor and control the GPS.

I recently reviewed the tool to better understand how it works. I went to www.tdsway.com/SatViewer and downloaded the application (account required, but it is free to sign up). Soon Nomads will come with the application pre-loaded on the unit. It installed easily on the desktop and automatically transferred to my Nomad. The application and a help file were added to the Programs folder.

One way we’re doing that is through the Outdoor Rugged Forum. If you have a question, we want to hear from you. If you have something to discuss with other Trimble users, we want to hear from you. Around here we read, contribute articles to, and advertise in many different places which contain information on mobile computing. In addition to the many different trade magazines which focus on specific vertical markets, some of my personal favorites include:

Pocket PC & Smartphone magazine: This publication really does a great job covering many topics of interest to mobile workers. While much of their coverage is on the consumer market (which still often has relevance to professionals), they have a special Enterprise section which is focused on professionals. That area includes stories on deployments of mobile devices that might be relevant to something you’re considering. Jan posted an article a few months ago about their annual list of third-party applications for Windows Mobile devices. That is a good example of the kind of information you can find in that publication.

I am writing to let you know how satisfied we are with our Trimble Yumas. We bought 4 with 3 of them currently in the field collecting data on electric utility assets for a fiber optic project. We are using the Yumas with a custom ESRI ArcPad application that I developed. I set up ArcPad so that the users in the field can attach voice tags and up to two photographs per feature. I was able to create a work around so that the user can start the Yuma's internal camera from within ArcPad. This has been an issue since the Yuma was released.

Sleeping on a bed of ice

I got the opposite of a warm welcome during a January trip to Sweden to meet with our European distributor.

But I should probably explain.

After our meetings—which went well, by the way—our hosts from Handheld Europe took us to spend a night at the world-famous ICEHOTEL located 124 miles (200 km) north of the Arctic Circle. Built entirely out of ice and snow every December until the spring thaw in April, the hotel has 80 rooms, many with furniture and sculptures carved from ice. The complex also includes an ICECHURCH and an ICEBAR, both furnished entirely with—you guessed it—ice.
