Great idea. My Yuma is past the born on date and is not under extended maintenance anyways. Whe I received the upgrade to Win7 I thought I could get is done but, I have an early build and need to send it in. Not happening. I can do an in-place upgrade with a USB bootable drive but that's about it.

I wish they did not lock this machine up so tightly. It is a PC not a datalogger.

WOW!! with two free programs (Google Earth & Earth Bridge) you can track your location in Google Earth in real time.

The trick to Google Earth is to veiw the area you will be in BEFORE you disconnect from the internet so the map data is stored in the cache file. Then you can access this info offline in the field.

Redirect the cache location to your storage card so your c:\ drive doesn't get filled with the Google cache.

Happy Mapping!

I just did the following on a Vista Yuma before I upgraded to Windows 7. Use diskpart from the command prompt to make the restore partition visible. Copy/Burn/Backup all the contents on the partion for future use. Remove the partion using disk management then combine the c: drive with the unallocated disk space using Easeus Partition Manager (free).

Follow this: http://uncoveryourrecoverypartition.blogspot.com/

Use this:
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

You will gain 4.4GB of disk space. Trimble should have just supplied everyone with restore disks so we could have more disk space.

THIS WILL PROBABLY VOID YOUR WARRANTY. USE AT OWN RISK.

Hello Greg

It seems I’m not the only one experiencing Wi-Fi related problems. I’m afraid no concrete solution has been suggested to me by Trimble or their suppliers, and I have had to make a decision that the Nomad is not compatible with my company software products hence we will not be recommending the Nomad to our customers at this stage. This is sad because I am fond of the device.

I can also share with you that the Getac PDA that I have tested works fine,not to mention the old Symbol WM5.0 PDAs also work without a glitch.

Help from Trimble is the ‘Order Of Day’, and would be appreciated.

Hi

Can anybody help me with this issue? I haven't heard back as yet...

I am a software provider and 5 clients using over 80 Nomads between them and they are all experiencing this issue. They are growing increasingly concerned and are considering returning their Nomads to us and replacing them with new devices, such at the Getac.

Surely other people have experienced this issue and can provided assistance??

Thanks

Just wondering if there was an answer on this issue as I am experiencing the same problem.

12 Nomad devices connecting to WPA2-PSK (TKIP). Either they connect and then lose the connection (go back to Available) or sit on Connecting for ages and never actually connect.

Hoping you can help

I have done several labs today with Nomad handheld and got very bad results, our setup at the customer has two access points and they need seamless roaming between those two AP-s. In our testing lab we have user AP-s from two different vendor HP and Ruckus, not AP-s were mixed but we did the testing in two different labs to get more consistent testing results. We also used WPA1,WPA2,TKIP,AES and open networks and all do the same:

Nomad is not roaming at all, it does it sometimes but occasionally fails to roam, then disconnects and sometimes failed to reconnect.

we also observed 2000 ms ping times just after roaming

we have tested various signal levels and configurations, Nomad fails in 90% cases.

The systems hangs in 80% cases after roaming or in weak signal levels.

we also investigated the antenna solution the Nomad is using, it has no diversity and just ceramic resonator in very weak position from design point of view, fortunately the wi-fi module is quite sensitive and this is not the worst thing in the brick

Just now the product is not suitable for mobile work in multi AP environments with seamless roaming requirement.

Hi,

I am a developer looking to create some utility apps to quickly grab coordinates from the GPS. I downloaded both the Camera SDK and the VGPS SDK from the Yuma website. The Camera SDK example works great, but the VGPS project requires a conversion in Visual Studio 2008 and when attempting to convert it fails. I have tested this on both the Yuma itself and a Windows XP development machine.

Could one of your developers possibly double check the file that out there, or let me know if I'm missing some prerequisite?

Also, are there any good web resources out there with open source apps devs have created for the Yuma? I hate to reinvent the wheel if something as simple as grabbing coordinates already exists.

I love the simplicity of the Virtual-GPS GUI that comes on the Yuma but there is no way to export the data that I can see, so that's why I'm trying to write something custom.

Thanks!

If you are able to get an upgrade coupon, you can use this to order the DVD from Microsoft. Once you have an upgrade DVD, go to the following link to download the appropriate drivers and instructions on upgrading to Windows 7.

Hi,

I think Trimble will release a Support Note regarding to the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Have you asked your Reseller/service center about it?
If you can't wait until the release:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-vista-to-windows-7
http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-do-vista-to-windows-7-upgrade/
or: http://www.google.com/#hl=hu&source=hp&q=upgrade+vista+to+windows+7&btnG=Google+search&lr=&aq=0&oq=upgrade&fp=3ca744059f4e686e
Obviously, you will need a USB DVD reader (plus the Win7 install disc) or a USB flash drive (at least 8 GB) to perform the update.

Hope this helps.

Hi Brad,

As far as I know, unfortunately not... All of the disks are pre-formatted and partitioned into 3 parts in the factory: C, D and a hidden partition. C is for system and D is for data. I think that you cannot extend the system partition in Vista too, but I don't have any experience with that. Maybe you can try with a 3rd-party software, but I really don't recommend it, as well as revealing and using the hidden one (that's for recovering Vista)... If you do and you experience some malfunction, you cannot recover the system, so you have to send the device back to your authorised service centre for recovery. And you have to pay for it, because the warranty doesn't cover it!!! So you decide, but personally I really recommend using an SD card instead of "hacking" the partitions...

Hope this helps,

The post from yesterday was posted as we were transitioning to another web server, so I reposted it below, and I you will not need to register again:

How many Nomads have been tested? 2
Have any other Windows mobile 6 devices been tested? No
If you factory default the AP and the Nomad, does the problem persist? Not physically possible as the site AP are our property.
Have you tested any other Access Points? Yes
Does the Nomad connect to a common Wi-fi hotspot? Yes
How did you determine that the Nomad was not connected even though it appeared connected? Using PING utility from the PDA.
Have you tried using the SSID lock to lock on to the SSID? Yes
Before installing the WLAN Driver update, were you ever able to connect to the AP? No
After installing the WLAN Driver update, were you ever able to connect to the AP? No

These types of WLAN issues are sometimes hard to diagnose. It does not appear to be an issue with the Nomad hardware if it is able to connect to other APs. In order to fully understand why the Nomad will not connect, the AP would need to be reset back to default settings. I have seen many times where it is some obscure setting on the AP that is causing the Nomad not to connect, even if other devices are connecting. The other devices have a different operating system and they may have a different WLAN module, driver and supplicant. You may also try to do a factory reset on the Nomad to see if this helps, but this is does erase everything except the OS, so you will need to back everything up. To perform a factory reset on the Nomad, Hold down the Power key and press the right soft key (---) to display a countdown. Continue to hold down both keys until it counts down to zero, followed by a brief appearance of the boot screen. Continue to hold both keys down until a blue screen with an eraser appears. Let up on the buttons and a message will display: WARNING: This operation will clear the persistent store including all user data, application, and settings! Press Enter to proceed, or Press any other key to cancel.

It is not possible to delete the in-ROM applications such as games, Outlook and Internet Explorer. However, it may be possible to hide the icons for other Windows Mobile applications by deleting the icon link, or overriding the dll in the Windows folder. Developers should refer to the ‘Hiding ROM Resident Applications’ technique described in the Nomad Developer Guide, which is part of the Nomad SDK (found in Nomad Developer Resources (http://www.trimble.com omad_rugged_handheld_ts.asp?Nav=Collection-64695)). This section describes how to remove the shortcut from the Start Menu, and how to create a CAB file that will hide in-ROM games. The technique for doing this for other Windows applications will be similar. Sample XML code is also included.

Nomad WiFi connection issue - posted in: Nomad - by: Davinder

I am having difficulties to get a number of Nomads to work on site, but work fine in the office…. see below

PDA: Nomad 800LE
Firmware: 1.04
OS: Windows Mobile Classic 6
Radio/Wifi/WLAN Driver 2.1

In Office: One Cisco AP with single vlan using WPA-PSK (TKIP) no EAP, no Radius
Site Setup: Multi (roaming) Cisco 1200 AP, vlans, radius server. Using WPA-PSK (TKIP) no EAP.

Info: My laptop and a Symbol PDA Mobile (5.0) communicate fine on the site network.
Cisco firmware versions on and off site are the same.

Symptoms:
Using the new driver on the Trimble V1.2 appeared connected to the Network_1 SSID but was actually NOT conencted at all!

Before the WLAN V1.2 upgrade the PDA used to oscillate between available, connecting, and connected and then go back to available….for ever. This cycle was continuously repeated.

Any light on the above very much appreciated.

Re-posting the answer given to the customer via Trimble_Support@Trimble.com:

Here is some sample code for using SCAN_ReadLabelEvent().

{

   HANDLE scanHandle;
   SCAN_BUFFER* scanBuffer;
   DWORD dwResult = SCAN_Open(&scanHandle);
   scanBuffer = SCAN_AllocateBuffer(MAX_DECODE_DATA);
   SCAN_UseControlPanelConfiguration(scanHandle, TRUE);
   SCAN_EnableScanning(scanHandle, TRUE);
   SCAN_EnableSoftTrigger(scanHandle, TRUE);

   // Get existing scan params
   SCAN_PARAMS params;
   SCAN_GetScanParams(scanHandle, &params);

   // Set scan duration to INFINITE for monitoring;
   // otherwise event will be signaled
   //after 'dwScanDuration', even if
   // barcode has not been scanned.
   params.dwScanDuration = INFINITE;
   SCAN_SetScanParams(scanHandle, &params);
   Sleep(1000);
   HANDLE evt = CreateEvent(NULL, TRUE, FALSE, NULL);
   ResetEvent(evt);

   // register monitor event
   SCAN_ReadLabelEvent(scanHandle, scanBuffer, evt, SCAN_TYPE_MONITOR);

   // wait for event to be signaled
   DWORD dwWaitRet = WaitForSingleObject(evt, INFINITE);

         if (dwWaitRet == WAIT_OBJECT_0)
         {
             WCHAR wszDecoded[255];
             BYTE* pBuf = SCNBUF_GETDATA(scanBuffer);
             MultiByteToWideChar(CP_ACP, 0, (char*)pBuf, scanBuffer->dwDataLength, wszDecoded, 255);
             wszDecoded[scanBuffer->dwDataLength] = 0;
             m_txtInfo.SetWindowText(wszDecoded);
         }

         CloseHandle(evt);
         SCAN_Close(scanHandle);

We do have an API to turn on and off the away facing camera as well as to switch between cameras.

Our technical support expert for the Yuma tablet is posting these to the Trimble Partners section on the Trimble web site now.

Can anyone tell me how I can control the front and back cameras programatically (powering and switching between the two, as well as capturing images from the active one). There must be a windows driver, and therefore a standard API (open, close, read, write, IoControl, etc) that could be used.

It would be appreciated if somone could tell me what the driver is, and details on how to use it would be even better! :-)

Is there a way to order a Yuma with one partition instead of 2? I need all the space I can get and do not want to use the SDIO slot for a card if I can help it.
